17 Injured After Air India Phuket-Delhi Flight Encounters Severe Mid-Air Turbulence
New Delhi, Aug 5: (JKNN) At least 17 people, including four crew members, were injured after an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi encountered severe turbulence during its journey on Tuesday.
According to Air India, flight AI2379 experienced a sudden loss of altitude while cruising, causing a brief turbulence-related incident. The aircraft, an Airbus A320neo carrying 137 passengers, including three infants, and eight crew members, continued its journey safely and landed in Delhi at 11:07 a.m. IST.
The airline said 13 passengers and four crew members sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical evaluation. While there were no reports of serious injuries, several passengers required precautionary medical examination and treatment.
Passengers described the incident as a sudden and sharp drop in altitude. One passenger said the aircraft descended abruptly, causing people to be thrown from their seats and resulting in head injuries.
Air India later confirmed that five injured passengers had been discharged, while the remaining individuals were continuing to receive medical care. The airline said its teams were assisting those affected and coordinating closely with hospitals.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a detailed investigation into the incident. The aircraft has been moved to a hangar, and the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder have been secured for examination.
Civil Aviation Minister officials visited the injured passengers at hospitals in Delhi and
assured them of all necessary assistance. Authorities said passenger safety remains the highest priority and all required measures are being taken as the investigation continues.
