Handwara, Jan 23, KNT: A residential house belonging to a specially disabled man was damaged due to heavy snowfall in Kralgund village of the Qaziabad area in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, local sources said.
Sources said the house of Ghulam Ahmad Mir, son of late Ghulam Rasool Mir, a resident of Kralgund and falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Kralgund, suffered extensive damage due to the weight of accumulated snow following the season’s first major snowfall in the region.
The heavy snowfall weakened the structure, leading to significant damage to the house. However, no loss of life or injuries were reported in the incident. All family members were safely evacuated from the house in time, sources added.
The affected house owner, who is specially disabled, has appealed to the government and district administration for immediate financial assistance to rebuild his damaged home. He said the snowfall has rendered his family without proper shelter and urged authorities to extend relief and support under disaster assistance norms.
The Kupwara region has witnessed widespread snowfall since Thursday night, resulting in the closure of major link roads and disruption of normal life in several areas. Authorities have advised inhabitants to remain cautious and report damage to the concerned departments for assessment and relief.
Officials said a detailed assessment of damage would be carried out once weather conditions improve and necessary assistance would be provided to affected families as per government rules. [KNT]
