Srinagar 27 November 2025 (JKNN) In a determined late-night operation amid freezing temperatures, Police Station Nigeen, led by SHO Showkat Hussain, and the Wildlife Department jointly formed a rescue team to track and tranquilize a bear that entered the Nigeen–Hazratbal residential zone on Tuesday evening.
The bear was first noticed near Nigeen Bagh, opposite Eatalian Pizza and close to NIT Srinagar, after its movement was captured on local CCTV cameras. Several residents also reported visual sightings, triggering panic in the locality.
Showkat Hussain, along with teams from the Wildlife Department, immediately moved into action despite the bone-chilling cold. Officials said police and wildlife personnel jointly surveyed the area and deployed teams across several pockets where the animal was suspected to be moving. Residents said the presence of the police throughout the night restored confidence in the locality.
Amir Mir, a local resident, said the swift response helped prevent any panic. “SHO Showkat Hussain remained on the ground throughout the night. Their timely presence reassured everyone and ensured the situation remained under control,” he said. Another resident, Muneer Mir, said the coordinated effort in freezing temperatures reflected the dedication of the teams. “Despite the weather and the late hour, police and wildlife officials worked tirelessly. The community appreciates this commitment,” he added.
Wildlife Ranger Fida Hussain confirmed that a trap had been successfully placed after verifying the bear’s presence through CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts.

“We have set up a proper trap and are hopeful the animal will be secured without causing injuries to people or the bear,” he said. Wildlife official Ayaz Bhat, who has been on the ground since morning forming teams to track the animal, said personnel were monitoring multiple locations to ensure public safety.
Locals said several witnesses had earlier spotted the bear moving through interior lanes, adding to the urgency of the operation. Officials have urged residents to avoid isolated areas during early morning and late evening hours until the bear is safely tranquilized and relocated. Police and wildlife teams continue to remain deployed across the area.
