Over 180 Dead, 330 Injured in Pakistan’s Monsoon Rains and Flash Floods
Islamabad, Aug 19: (JKNN) Since July, relentless monsoon rains and flash floods have caused the deaths of more than 180 people and left over 330 others injured in various parts of Pakistan, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).The NDMA reported that among the victims were 96 children and 30 women, as detailed in a report also covered by Xinhua news agency.The eastern Punjab province bore the brunt of the disaster, with 68 fatalities, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the northwest with 65 deaths, and Sindh in the south where 32 people lost their lives.The report further detailed that 13 people died in Balochistan in the southwest, five were killed in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and four lost their lives in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region.In addition to the tragic loss of life, 352 livestock animals have perished, and significant infrastructure damage has been reported, including the destruction or damage of 2,293 houses and 30 bridges.According to media sources, the NDMA has issued alerts for potential urban flooding in cities like Lahore, Sialkot, and Narowal due to anticipated heavy rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours. A medium to high-level flood surge is also expected in the Chenab River.NDMA officials have also cautioned that Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, and Multan could face urban flooding, with a heightened risk of flash floods in the mountainous streams of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur.The flash floods have also disrupted traffic along the Pak-Afghan Highway in the Landikotal tehsil of Khyber district.Meanwhile, several districts in Balochistan have been severely affected by heavy rains, with flash floods entering homes and shops, causing major disruptions to the communication network. The northeastern region of Balochistan, including Chaman, remains under the influence of a powerful weather system.
