Strong 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Japan’s Sanriku Coast, Tsunami Alert Issued
Srinagar 20/04/2026 (JKNN) A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the Sanriku coast of Japan on Monday, with the tremor recorded at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, raising concerns of potential damage and aftershocks.
Following the quake, authorities issued a tsunami alert for the northern coastal regions. According to NHK, waves as high as 3 metres (10 feet) could strike parts of the coastline in the coming hours.
Emergency services have been placed on high alert, and residents in vulnerable coastal areas have been urged to move to higher ground as a precaution.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation, while further updates on damage and casualties are awaited.
