Situation under control, public urged to stay away from rivers and streams: DC Kulgam
Says nomadic families evacuated in advance, protection works to finish within a month to minimise flood risk; inspects flood-prone Laisoo and Gudder areas

Kulgam, July 24 (KNC): Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Shahzad Alam (IAS), Friday said the situation in the district is under control despite the ongoing spell of incessant rainfall.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the flood-prone Laisoo and Gudder areas, Alam said the visit was aimed at assessing the ground situation and reviewing the preparedness of departments.
“As of now, the situation is normal. Unlike last year, no major problem has arisen due to the continuous rainfall as the administration has already taken preventive measures,” he said.
The Deputy Commissioner said flood protection and mitigation works are being carried out on a priority basis and are expected to be completed within a month.
He said the district administration activated its response mechanism from the first day of the rainfall, with Revenue officials, including Tehsildars, Patwaris, Numberdars and Chowkidars, along with Auqaf Committees, shifting vulnerable nomadic families to safer locations.
“There will be no negligence in rescue operations. Our effort is to act in advance and ensure the safety of the people,” Alam said.
He appealed to the public to stay away from rivers, streams and other water bodies during the ongoing wet spell and advised residents to contact the district administration or the designated control rooms in case of any emergency.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Viqar Ahmed Giri, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bashir-ul-Hassan, and other district officers accompanied the Deputy Commissioner during the inspection. (KNC)
