Police Files Charge-Sheet in Alleged Attack Bid on Dr Farooq Abdullah
Jammu, May 9:(KNC)Police on Friday filed a charge-sheet against an accused in connection with the alleged attempt to assassinate former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah during a wedding function in Jammu earlier this year.
According to officials, the charge-sheet was presented against Kamal Singh Jamwal, son of Late Ajit Singh Jamwal and resident of Purani Mandi, Jammu, before the competent court after completion of investigation into the firing incident that took place at Royal Park, Greater Kailash on March 11, 2026.
Police said Dr Farooq Abdullah had arrived at the venue along with senior political leaders, dignitaries and guests to attend a marriage समारोह when the accused allegedly opened fire from a revolver with the intention of targeting him, creating panic and chaos at the function.
The case was initially registered at Police Station Gangyal and later handed over to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for detailed probe. During investigation, the SIT conducted searches, examined witnesses and collected electronic as well as physical evidence linked to the case.
Investigators seized a revolver, empty and live cartridges, mobile phones, CCTV and DVR footage, clothes of the accused, handwritten papers and other material from the possession of the accused. The seized items were later sent to forensic laboratories for ballistic, electronic and handwriting examination, police said.
As per the charge-sheet, the accused allegedly harboured resentment against Dr Farooq Abdullah over issues related to Kashmiri migrants and their properties. Police claimed that the act was pre-planned and that the accused had arrived at the venue with a loaded weapon and a deliberate intention to attack the former Chief Minister.
The investigation further revealed that the accused allegedly waited for an opportunity before approaching Dr Abdullah and firing at him. However, the attempt failed after people present at the venue immediately overpowered him, police said.
Officials stated that CCTV footage, witness statements and forensic reports form a key part of the prosecution case. The charge-sheet also includes reports received from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) and ballistic experts.
Police maintained that the firing incident was intentional and not accidental, adding that evidence gathered during investigation pointed towards a planned attempt to eliminate the National Conference leader.(KNC)
