Dal Lake is not a dustbin: Growing litter menace raises serious civic sense concerns in Srinagar

Srinagar, Aug 3: (JKNN) The increasing dumping of plastic bottles, food wrappers, disposable cups, and other waste along the banks of Dal Lake has once again highlighted the urgent need for civic sense and environmental responsibility among both locals and tourists.
Dal Lake is one of Kashmir’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of Srinagar’s natural beauty.
However, littering around its shores is damaging the fragile ecosystem, polluting the water, and threatening aquatic life. Environmentalists and local residents have repeatedly expressed concern that irresponsible waste disposal is gradually eroding the lake’s ecological health and scenic charm.
Citizens have urged the authorities to strengthen cleanliness drives and enforce stricter action against those found littering in and around the lake.
A public awareness message accompanying the appeal reads: “Dal Lake is not your dustbin. Show civic sense. Carry your waste with you, use designated bins, and help preserve the beauty and dignity of Srinagar.”
Protecting Dal Lake is a shared responsibility, and maintaining cleanliness is not just the duty of the authorities but of every citizen and visitor who enjoys the breathtaking beauty of Kashmir.
