Officer Suffers Bite Injury During Protest Scuffle; FIR Registered at PS Kothibagh, Investigation Underway
Srinagar, Aug 6 (KNC): Srinagar Police has initiated legal proceedings against People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti following an alleged assault on a police officer during a protest held at S.K. Park in Srinagar, with the accused summoned to join the investigation at Police Station Kothibagh.
According to an official statement, the protest, led by PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija Mufti, was held on the evening of August 4, 2026, at S.K. Park. During the demonstration, a section of the protestors allegedly attempted to violate restrictions by blocking Residency Road and moving towards Lal Chowk, prompting intervention by police personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
Police stated that adequate male and female contingents were present at the venue and repeatedly appealed to the demonstrators to remain peaceful and comply with lawful directions. However, despite repeated requests, some protestors allegedly attempted to breach police barricades and obstruct security personnel from performing their official duties.
During the ensuing scuffle, police alleged that Iltija Mufti physically assaulted a police officer while he was discharging his lawful duties. She is further accused of grabbing the officer and biting his forearm, resulting in a bleeding injury.
The injured officer was immediately shifted to a hospital, where he received medical treatment, including wound management, tetanus prophylaxis, vaccination and other protocol-based preventive care prescribed by attending doctors.
Taking serious note of the alleged assault on a public servant and obstruction of lawful police action, Srinagar Police registered FIR No. 63/2026 at Police Station Kothibagh under relevant provisions of law and launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police have summoned Iltija Mufti to appear before Police Station Kothibagh on August 7 to join the investigation in accordance with law.
Srinagar Police said the investigation is continuing and reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against all individuals found involved in the alleged assault on police personnel and obstruction of public servants while performing their official duties. (KNC)
