“Women’s Dreams Denied, Nation Let Down”: PM Modi Blasts Opposition
Calls It Betrayal of Nari Shakti
New Delhi, Apr 19 (KNC): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on opposition parties after the women’s reservation bill failed to pass in Parliament, terming the development a “betrayal” of women and a major setback to their long-standing aspirations for political representation.
As per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, addressing the nation a day after the bill’s defeat in the Lok Sabha, Modi said the opposition had “mercilessly crushed” the dreams of women by blocking the legislation that sought to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures.
The Prime Minister expressed regret over the outcome, saying despite the government’s best efforts, the bill could not be cleared. “I seek forgiveness from all the women of the country,” he said, adding that the nation was witnessing how the progress of women had been halted due to political resistance.
Modi alleged that parties such as the Congress, DMK, TMC and Samajwadi Party placed their political interests above national priorities and women’s empowerment. He accused them of undermining a historic opportunity to strengthen the role of women in governance and policy-making.
He further stated that the bill, often referred to as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was aimed at empowering women without taking away opportunities from any section, and was designed to ensure balanced representation across regions.
Criticising what he described as “self-serving politics,” the Prime Minister said the opposition had disrespected the spirit of the Constitution by opposing the legislation. He also alleged that divisive narratives were used to derail the bill, including attempts to create regional differences.
Highlighting the broader vision behind the proposal, Modi said the legislation was an essential step towards inclusive growth and equitable participation of women in democracy. He added that the setback would be remembered by women across the country, asserting that their aspirations cannot be ignored indefinitely.
The Prime Minister reiterated that empowering women remains central to nation-building and said efforts will continue to ensure greater participation of women in all spheres of governance and development. (KNC)
