Powerful 7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Philippines, Tsunami Warnings Issued
Manila, June 8: (JKNN) A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck the Mindanao region in southern Philippines on Monday morning, prompting authorities to issue tsunami warnings for coastal areas in the Philippines and neighboring Indonesia.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck near General Santos City in Mindanao at a shallow depth, causing strong tremors across the region. Emergency agencies immediately advised residents in vulnerable coastal areas to move to higher ground as a precaution against possible tsunami waves.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised a tsunami warning, cautioning that waves could affect several coastal communities and that sea-level disturbances may continue for hours. Indonesian authorities also issued alerts for parts of the country’s northeastern coastline.
Initial reports did not indicate any major casualties or widespread damage, though power outages and panic were reported in some areas. Several aftershocks were also recorded following the main quake.
Authorities are continuing to assess the situation and monitor the tsunami threat.
The Philippines lies along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, making it one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions.
More details are awaited.
