Land Caves In, Cracks Appear in Homes After Landslide in Sarouti Jabran Village of Poonch
Shah Raqib
Poonch, August 2, KNT: A massive landslide has struck the Sarouti Jabran area of Mendhar in Poonch district, damaging a government school and several residential houses, while forcing residents to seek immediate intervention from the administration for their rehabilitation.
The landslide has triggered ground subsidence in the locality, with large cracks developing in several houses as portions of land continue to cave in. Residents said the situation has created panic among families, who fear that further movement of the unstable slope could endanger lives and property.
Locals said the affected school building has also sustained damage, raising concerns over the safety of students and staff. They urged the authorities to assess the structural stability of the building before allowing educational activities to resume.
The affected families have appealed to the district administration to conduct an immediate assessment of the damage, provide adequate compensation and initiate rehabilitation measures without delay.
Locals have also demanded that vulnerable families be shifted to safer locations at the earliest, warning that continued rainfall could worsen the landslide and increase the risk to life and property.
They urged the administration and the Disaster Management authorities to declare the area vulnerable, undertake preventive measures and ensure the long-term safety of the affected population. [KNT]
