Eid ul-Fitr 2026 Moon Sighting Update: Crescent Not Sighted, Eid Likely on March 20
Srinagar, March 18: (JKNN) The much-awaited festival of Eid ul-Fitr is approaching as Muslims across the world conclude the holy month of Ramadan with anticipation and prayers. As of Wednesday evening, reports indicate that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Shawwal has not been sighted, making it likely that Eid ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, March 20, 2026.
March 18 corresponds to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447 Hijri, and moon sighting committees, including the Saudi Supreme Court, had urged people to observe the skies for the Shawwal crescent. However, with no confirmed sighting, Ramadan is expected to complete 30 days this year.
In India, Eid celebrations traditionally follow a day after Saudi Arabia due to geographical differences in moon visibility. If the moon is sighted in India on March 19, Eid will be observed the following day.
Eid ul-Fitr, known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” marks the end of a month-long period of fasting, prayer, and reflection. It falls on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, which is based on moon sightings.
The occasion holds deep religious significance, as each Islamic month begins only after the crescent moon is sighted. With the conclusion of Ramadan, Muslims prepare to celebrate Eid with special prayers, charity (Zakat al-Fitr), and gatherings with family and friends.
Further updates on moon sighting are awaited.
