Several Houses Inundated; Residents Demand Permanent Flood Mitigation Measures

Ganderbal, Aug 2 (KNC): Heavy rainfall wreaked havoc across parts of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Sunday, with a cloudburst triggering flash floods in the Safapora area while severe waterlogging inundated several residential localities in Alasteng Busserbugh, disrupting normal life and causing damage to property.
Officials said a cloudburst in Safapora led to a sudden surge of floodwaters, inundating several houses and creating panic among residents. The flash floods affected multiple residential pockets, forcing people to rush to safety as water entered their homes.
The worst-hit localities in Safapora included Kohistan Colony, Gulab Sheikh Colony and Bakshi Mohalla, where floodwaters entered residential houses following intense rainfall, causing damage to household belongings and affecting daily life.
Residents said the sudden flooding caused significant losses to household items and left families struggling to cope with the aftermath of the heavy rains.
Meanwhile, incessant rainfall also resulted in extensive waterlogging in Alasteng Busserbugh, where several houses were submerged after rainwater accumulated in low-lying areas, leaving residents facing considerable hardship.
Locals alleged that similar flooding incidents have occurred repeatedly in recent days but claimed that no effective measures have been taken by the concerned departments to resolve the problem. They urged the authorities to immediately upgrade the drainage infrastructure and implement permanent flood mitigation measures to prevent recurring inundation and property damage.
Officials said the situation is being closely monitored and the extent of the damage is being assessed. They added that no loss of life or injuries had been reported till the filing of this report. (KNC)
