Flash Floods Trigger Widespread Damage in Udhampur’s Barkuanda; Residents Shifted to Safer Locations
Rescue and relief operations underway as heavy rainfall continues; authorities issue flood advisory
Udhampur, July 24 (KNC): Torrential rainfall triggered flash floods in the Barkuanda area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district during the early hours of Friday, damaging several residential houses and forcing the evacuation of families from vulnerable areas, officials said.
According to officials, continuous heavy rainfall led to a sudden surge in water levels in local streams and drains, resulting in flash floods that inundated residential localities and caused significant damage to property. Household belongings were swept away in several low-lying areas, creating panic among residents.
Officials said a number of houses sustained damage due to the overflowing floodwaters. As a precautionary measure, families living in flood-prone and vulnerable locations were immediately shifted to safer places to prevent any untoward incident.
Following the incident, teams from the Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the district administration rushed to the affected area and launched rescue and relief operations. Authorities have also started assessing the extent of damage caused by the flash floods.
Officials confirmed that no casualties or injuries have been reported so far. They, however, urged people residing near nallahs, streams, and other flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into risky locations as rainfall continues across the region.
The administration said the situation is being closely monitored, and necessary assistance is being provided to the affected families. (KNC)
