Portfolio Reallocation Also on Cards as J&K Government Eyes Full Ministerial Strength
Jammu, July 2 (KNC): The Jammu and Kashmir Government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is likely to witness its first Cabinet reshuffle and expansion around July 20, with new faces expected to be inducted into the Council of Ministers and several existing portfolios likely to be reassigned, according to reports.
Sources indicated that the exercise is expected to take place a few days before or after July 20, when the ruling National Conference has planned a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi during the opening of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The reshuffle is being viewed as a significant political and administrative move ahead of the forthcoming Assembly session and as the Government approaches two years in office later this year.
At present, the Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet has three vacant positions. Under the existing legal provisions applicable to the Union Territory, the Council of Ministers can have a maximum of nine members, including the Chief Minister. The current Cabinet consists of the Chief Minister and five Ministers, leaving room for the induction of three more Ministers if no incumbent is dropped.
Apart from the induction of new Ministers, a reshuffle of important departments is also expected. Several Cabinet Ministers presently hold multiple portfolios, while the Chief Minister himself is handling a number of key departments, including Finance, Revenue, Housing and Urban Development, Tourism and General Administration. The proposed changes are aimed at improving governance, administrative efficiency and the distribution of responsibilities within the Government.
Political observers believe the expansion could also address regional representation and strengthen the Government ahead of future legislative and administrative challenges. Speculation continues over whether alliance partners or additional political groups may receive representation in the Cabinet, though no official confirmation has been issued so far.
Official sources have maintained that no final decision has yet been announced regarding the names of prospective Ministers or the portfolios to be reshuffled. However, the anticipated Cabinet expansion is expected to provide the newly inducted Ministers adequate time to settle into their responsibilities before the next session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.(KNC)
