Jammu, Feb 3, KNT: Members of the Jammu Bar Association on Tuesday staged a protest demanding the establishment of a Law University in Jammu, warning of a wider agitation if the government did not accept their demand.
The protesting lawyers said Jammu had been consistently ignored in major educational and institutional decisions and asserted that the Law University must be established in the region. Raising slogans, they accused the Deputy Chief Minister of making statements that they said demeaned Jammu.
Addressing the protest, members of the Bar Association said the Deputy Chief Minister should refrain from attacking Jammu and remember that he belongs to the region and would continue to live here. They alleged that recent remarks amounted to an attack on the entire Jammu region and had hurt public sentiment.
The lawyers warned that the denial of a Law University to Jammu would force people to take to the streets. They said the demand was not political but linked to educational equity and the future of students in the region.
The protesters urged the government to take an immediate and clear decision on the issue, stating that continued silence would only escalate the agitation. The protest remained peaceful, though the Bar Association indicated that further action could follow if their demand was ignored. [KNT]
