Elderly Kashmiri Pandit couple assaulted in Rajbagh, accused arrested
Srinagar, Jan 8, KNT: Police have taken cognizance of a serious assault incident involving an elderly Kashmiri Pandit couple in the Rajbagh area of Srinagar, leading to the arrest of the accused and initiation of legal proceedings.
According to police, on receipt of information, it was found that Vivek Batra, a dismissed former Indian Revenue Service officer, along with six associates, allegedly entered the residential premises of Ashok Toshkhanai and his wife Kusum and assaulted members of the family. The accused reportedly arrived at the spot in two vehicles.
Officials said the group also attempted to set the house on fire, creating panic in the area. During the incident, several women sustained injuries and were immediately shifted to a hospital, where their condition has been stated to be stable.
Police said they responded promptly to the incident, arrested the accused persons involved, and registered a case under relevant sections of law. Further investigation has been taken up to ascertain all aspects of the incident and establish individual roles.
Police also noted that the main accused, Vivek Batra, is a dismissed former IRS officer who has previously been involved in multiple controversies. He is stated to have faced cases related to cheating, corruption and possession of disproportionate assets, registered at various places outside the Union Territory. His dismissal from service, police said, was linked to serious misconduct and corruption related charges.
Authorities said strict legal action will follow based on the outcome of the investigation. [KNT]
