59 stolen smartphones recovered, two arrested at Mazhama railway station
Srinagar, Aug 8 (JKNN): Railway Police Post Mazhama recovered 59 stolen smartphones and apprehended two suspects during a routine surveillance operation at Mazhama Railway Station, police officials told JKNN.
According to police officials, alert Railway Police personnel intercepted two bike-borne individuals outside the railway station after noticing their suspicious movement while carrying a large polythene bag. During questioning, the duo failed to give a satisfactory explanation about the contents of the bag.
A search of the bag led to the recovery of 59 smartphones of different brands, including Samsung, OnePlus, Redmi, Vivo, Oppo, Motorola, Realme, Xiaomi, Infinix GT, Nothing, Honor, Narzo, Google, CMF, and iQOO.
The arrested individuals were identified as Shahnawaz Ahmad Rather (25), son of Abdul Rehman Rather, and Mehboob Hussain Rather (18), son of Fayaz Ahmad Rather, both residents of Mattipora, Pattan in Baramulla district.
During preliminary questioning, police said the main accused, Shahnawaz Ahmad Rather, claimed that the consignment had been sent through a courier parcel from Bengaluru in November 2025 by Showkat Ali Rather, a resident of Mattipora, Pattan. Police officials said that upon contacting his family, it was found that Showkat Ali Rather has been missing since November 2025.
A case has been registered under FIR No. 3/2026 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Railway Act at Railway Police Station Srinagar.
Police officials told JKNN that further investigation is underway to trace the interstate parcel trail, identify the original owners of the recovered smartphones, and uncover the wider network involved in the alleged stolen mobile racket.
