VPN Services Suspended in Rajouri Over Security Concerns
Rajouri, Aug 31(NVI): Exercising concern over the aspect of cyber security, the District Magistrate, Rajouri, has ordered the immediate suspension of Virtual Private Networks (VPN’s) in the district.
“The move, exercised under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, BNSS, shall help protect sensitive data concerning the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024,” reads an order issued by the office of the district Magistrate Rajouri,
It reads, in the wake of a communication by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajouri, there has been an unprecedented increase in VPN usage across the district in the recent days, which triggers suspicion about the cyber threats.
It reads as, VPNs are designed to encrypt data and mask users from firewalls, thereby concealing user activity, apart from surveillance on the internet.
“In view of the possible threat of leakage of election-related data and other sensitive information, the district administration has taken the stated precautionary measure. The suspension would continue till the conclusion of the election process in Rajouri,” reads the order.
The order further reads, It is also a commitment of the administration to ensure security and integrity for the upcoming elections. The residents and internet users of the district should abide by the orders until further notice.—(NVI)
