The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, with a hearing scheduled for August 20. The incident, which occurred on August 9, has sparked nationwide protests by doctors demanding justice and enhanced safety measures. The CBI is investigating, including examining the call records of former principal Sandip Ghosh. The Union Home Ministry has instructed state police to report the law and order situation every two hours amid ongoing protests and disruptions in medical services.

Amid nationwide protests, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the recent rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. The matter will be considered by a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Tuesday, August 20.

The postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on August 9 while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. This incident has sparked nationwide strikes and protests by doctors, who are demanding severe punishment for the accused and enhanced safety measures for themselves.

Earlier on Thursday, two lawyers practising in the Supreme Court wrote a letter to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, urging him to take suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder of the doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.

The nation looks to the judiciary as the ultimate guardian of justice, the last refuge for those whose cries have been silenced by brutality. The victim in this case, a young doctor whose life was dedicated to serving others, deserves nothing less than the full measure of justice that our legal system can provide. Her death must not be in vain; it must galvanise us to act, to ensure that no other woman suffers such a fate,” stated the letter.

It further stated that the time has come for the judiciary to send a clear and resounding message that such heinous crimes will not be tolerated and that the sanctity of life and the dignity of women must be fiercely protected by the full might of the law.

CBI investigates Kolkata murder-rape case:
Investigating officers from the CBI are examining the call details and chats of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with their probe into the rape and murder of the woman doctor. Ghosh, who appeared before CBI officers for the third consecutive day on Sunday, was asked to provide details of the phone calls he made before and after the incident at the hospital, according to an officer from the central probe agency. The CBI has the main accused in their custody and is also questioning over 20 people in connection with the case.

The sleuths are also considering contacting the mobile phone service provider to obtain details of Ghosh’s phone calls and data usage.

The former principal, who was interrogated by the agency’s officers for over 13 hours from Saturday until past midnight, arrived at the CBI office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake at 11 am on Sunday.

The Union Home Ministry has instructed all state police forces to provide situation reports every two hours following the protests by doctors, nursing staff, and others against the alleged rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. In a communication to the state police forces, the Home Ministry emphasised that the law and order situation in all states should be monitored in light of the protests.

“Henceforth, a continuous two-hourly law and order situation report in this regard should be sent to the MHA control room (New Delhi) by Fax/Email/WhatsApp from 1600 hours today,” the communication sent on Friday stated.

Doctors and other medical staff have been protesting across different parts of the country, affecting the functioning of health facilities. They are advocating for a central law to address violence against healthcare personnel, the designation of hospitals as safe zones, and mandatory security measures among other demands.TET
