SMC Workers Issue Final Warning as Three-Day Deadline for Release of Pending Salaries Ends This Evening

Srinagar 09/02/2026 (JKNN) The workers of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Monday issued a final and emotional appeal to the authorities, warning that the three-day ultimatum given for the release of their long-pending salaries will expire this evening.
The aggrieved workers said they have not been paid for months, leaving their families in deep financial distress. “How long can a worker survive without salary?” they asked, adding that household expenses, children’s education, rent, and medical needs have become impossible to manage.
“We gave the authorities three full days, and today those three days end by evening,” the workers said. “This was not a threat but a chance for the government to understand our pain. Sadly, our patience is being tested again.”
The workers warned that if their genuine demands are not addressed even after the deadline expires, they will be left with no option but to intensify their agitation. “We don’t want confrontation, but hunger leaves no room for silence. We mean it,” they said.
Appealing to the administration’s conscience, the workers urged officials to act before the situation escalates further. “We are employees, not beggars. Our salaries are our right, not a favour,” they added.
Addressing the gathering, leaders of the employees’ unions—SMC Employees Association President Nazir Ahmad Ahanger and Workers Union chief Mohammad Ramzan Sheikh—issued a stern warning, stating that the protest would intensify if the dues were not cleared at the earliest.
“This delay is unjustified and intolerable. If salaries are not released immediately, routine work will come to a halt. The agitation will be extended to all wards of Srinagar if the authorities continue to ignore us,” Ahanger said.
