Former India captain and Baroda legend Dattajirao Gaekwad has passed away, aged 95.
Gaekwad, the country’s oldest living Test cricketer at the time of his passing, died in a Baroda hospital on Tuesday (February 13) of age-related illness.
Gaekwad made his India debut at Leeds in 1952 during the country’s first post-Independence tour of England. In all, he played 11 Tests between 1952 and 1961 finishing with a solitary half-century against the West Indies in Delhi.
A prolific batter at the first class level, Gaekwad scored 5788 runs from 110 games with 17 centuries including a best of 249* against Maharashtra, one of three double-centuries at this level. As captain, he led Baroda to a Ranji Trophy title in the 1957-58 season.
Gaekwad’s son Anshuman also went on to represent the country in 40 Test matches and also coached the national team in the 90s.
