Power Development Department’s (PDD) Assurances Clash with Ground Reality: Kashmiris Endure Electricity Woes During Crucial Ramadan Period
By:- Aijaz Rather
14/03/2024 (JKNN) In what seems to be a stark contradiction between official assurances and ground realities, the Power Development Department (PDD) has declared that electricity supply would be maintained during the holy month of Ramadan.
However, the lived experiences of residents in Kashmir tell a different story, one fraught with persistent power outages during critical times, namely Sehri and Iftar.
Despite the PDD’s claims of ensuring uninterrupted power supply, the reality on the ground paints a picture of frustration and inconvenience for the people of Kashmir. The absence of electricity during Sehri, the pre-dawn meal before the fast begins, and Iftar, the evening meal to break the fast, has left many residents feeling distressed and exasperated.
The significance of uninterrupted power supply during Ramadan cannot be overstated, especially in a region like Kashmir where the observance of this holy month holds immense cultural and religious importance. With daily routines altered to accommodate fasting and prayers, access to electricity becomes essential for various activities, including meal preparation, communication, and worship.
However, reports from across Kashmir indicate a recurring pattern of power disruptions, particularly during Sehri and Iftar times. This not only hampers the ability of residents to observe their religious obligations but also adds to the overall discomfort and inconvenience faced during this sacred month.
The plight of Kashmiris grappling with electricity shortages during Ramadan underscores broader systemic issues within the region’s infrastructure and governance. Despite assurances from authorities, the failure to provide consistent and reliable electricity supply reflects poorly on the effectiveness of governmental initiatives and highlights the need for urgent reforms.
As Kashmiris continue to navigate through the challenges posed by power shortages, calls for accountability and immediate action to address the underlying issues have grown louder. The PDD’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply during Ramadan must translate into tangible improvements on the ground, restoring faith and alleviating the hardships faced by the residents during this auspicious month.
