Permission Withdrawn for SMVD Medical College by NMC, Students to Be Shifted
Reasi, Jan 7, KNT: The National Medical Commission has withdrawn its permission for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College, Kakryal, leading to a decision to shift affected students to other recognised medical institutes, official sources said.
The move follows an inspection visit by an NMC team to the SMVD Medical College two days ago.
The “hurriedly” inspection was conducted to assess compliance with regulatory norms, including faculty strength, infrastructure, clinical material, and academic facilities. Based on the findings, the commission decided to withdraw the college’s permission, sources added.
The decision comes amid ongoing protests by the Sangharsh Samiti, a group spearheading agitation over the future of the institution.
Notably, just a day before the NMC order, one of the Sangharsh Samiti leaders had publicly claimed during a protest that the decision would be in their favour. The leader had also asserted that they would soon be “having a tea” with the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, suggesting confidence in a positive outcome.
According to officials familiar with the process, arrangements are being made to shift students to other government medical colleges to ensure that their academic sessions are not disrupted.
Sources said the relocation will be carried out as per NMC guidelines, with due consideration to students’ academic progress and seat availability in alternative institutions. The administration is expected to issue a detailed plan outlining the timeline and modalities of the transfer.
Further directions from the NMC and the Jammu and Kashmir administration are awaited. [KNT]
