Omar Abdullah Visits Fire-Ravaged Sonamarg Market, Assures Relief for Affected Traders

Srinagar, Feb 11, KNT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday visited Sonamarg to take stock of the devastation caused by a massive fire that broke out last Saturday, leaving 45 shops, including several hotels, in ruins.

Accompanied by senior officials, the Chief Minister interacted with affected traders and assured them of all possible support in their rehabilitation efforts.

Expressing solidarity with the business community, Abdullah emphasized the government’s commitment to providing immediate relief and facilitating the rebuilding of livelihoods. “We understand the hardships faced by those who have lost their source of income overnight. The administration will extend all necessary assistance to ensure their swift recovery,” he said.

Following the visit, the Chief Minister convened a high-level meeting, bringing together Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, SSP Ganderbal, MLA Kangan, and other key officials to assess the extent of damage and strategize relief measures. The administration is expected to outline a comprehensive plan for compensation and rehabilitation in the coming days.

The fire, which swept through the market on Saturday, has dealt a severe blow to the local economy, with shopkeepers and hoteliers struggling to cope with their losses.

Officials are currently investigating the cause of the blaze while ensuring that affected traders receive timely aid. [KNT]
