Afghanistan recorded a historic victory over New Zealand, winning by 84 runs in their T20 World Cup 2024 clash, marking their first-ever win against the Kiwis.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s brilliant innings of 80 runs was pivotal in Afghanistan setting a total of 159/6 in their 20 overs at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.Opting to bat first, Afghanistan made a steady start. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran built a strong partnership of 103 runs.

New Zealand’s fielding was lackluster, as they missed several catch and run-out opportunities early in the game.Gurbaz reached his half-century, while Zadran was dismissed for 44 runs, giving Matt Henry the breakthrough New Zealand desperately needed.

Azmatullah Omarzai then added a quick 22 runs off 13 balls before also falling to Henry. Gurbaz’s impressive knock ended at 80 runs from 56 balls, solidifying Afghanistan’s competitive total.
