Mohammad Rizwan Replaces Babar Azam as Pakistan’s ODI and T20I Captain

27/10/2024 (JKNN) In a major leadership change, Mohammad Rizwan has been appointed Pakistan’s ODI and T20I captain, taking over from Babar Azam after a series of disappointing World Cup performances. The announcement was made by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi at a press conference held in Lahore on October 27. Salman Ali Agha has also been named as the team’s new vice-captain.

Rizwan’s Journey to Captaincy

Rizwan, who previously led the Multan Sultans to their Pakistan Super League (PSL) title in 2021 and three consecutive runner-up finishes, has now been entrusted with steering Pakistan’s white-ball future. Although he has captained Pakistan in Test matches, this will be his first stint as the leader in ODI and T20I formats.

PCB’s Decision

Chairman Naqvi highlighted that after consulting with mentors from the Champions Cup and the team’s coaching staff, Rizwan emerged as the preferred choice for captain, with Salman Ali Agha as his deputy. The decision follows Pakistan’s group-stage exits from both the 50-over World Cup in India and the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and UAE, prompting Babar Azam to step down.

Rizwan’s First Challenges

Rizwan’s first assignment as the new captain will be the upcoming series against Australia, where Pakistan will play three ODIs and three T20Is starting November 4. Later, he will lead the team in an ODI series against Zimbabwe. However, vice-captain Salman Ali Agha is set to lead Pakistan in the T20I series in Zimbabwe, beginning December 1, as Rizwan will not be part of that squad.

The PCB has renewed its commitment to stability and growth under Rizwan, who remains in Category A on the central contract list. This leadership reshuffle represents a significant shift as Pakistan eyes redemption and consistency under their new captain.
