Kashmir to Ladakh in Deep Freeze: Cold Wave Brings Season’s Coldest Night

A severe cold wave continued to sweep across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on Wednesday, with several places recording the lowest temperatures of the season, intensifying winter chill and bringing daily life to a standstill in many areas. The harsh conditions are being felt most acutely in Kashmir Valley and the cold desert regions of Ladakh, while parts of Jammu also witnessed a sharp dip in night temperatures.
In Kashmir Valley, sub-zero temperatures prevailed across almost all districts. Sonamarg (-9.8°C), Gulmarg (-9.2°C) and Pahalgam (-8.6°C) emerged among the coldest places, while Srinagar city shivered at -5.1°C. The mercury plunged further at Srinagar Airport (-6.8°C), disrupting early morning routines. South Kashmir districts including Shopian (-7.8°C) and Pulwama (-6.8°C) also recorded biting cold conditions.
The Jammu region experienced comparatively milder but still notable cold, with Bhaderwah (-3.4°C) and Rajouri (-1.0°C) slipping below freezing point. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 7.1°C, while higher reaches such as Batote (2.8°C) and Udhampur (2.0°C) felt a pronounced chill.
In Ladakh, extreme cold conditions persisted, with Drass freezing at a bone-chilling -24.7°C, reaffirming its reputation as one of the coldest inhabited places in the region. Nyoma (-20.1°C), Padum (-17.2°C), Hanle (-16.9°C) and Leh (-14.6°C) also recorded severe sub-zero temperatures, intensifying the winter freeze.
Meteorological officials said the cold wave is likely to continue, advising residents to take necessary precautions, especially during night and early morning hours.
