India vs Bangladesh Champions Trophy 2025 Match No 2: Shubman Gill’s 8th Ton, Mohammed Shami’s 5-For Light Up India’s Win
Dubai: India began their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a convincing six-wicket victory over Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday. The match saw stellar performances from Mohammed Shami and Shubman Gill, who played crucial roles in securing the win.
Shami’s Record-Breaking Spell
Opting to bat first, Bangladesh had a disastrous start as Indian pacer Mohammed Shami wreaked havoc with the new ball. The veteran speedster registered sensational figures of 5 for 53 in his 10-over spell, dismantling Bangladesh’s top order and reducing them to 35 for 5 within the first powerplay. His spell marked yet another milestone in his career, as he became the first Indian bowler to claim multiple five-wicket hauls in Champions Trophy history.
However, Bangladesh found some stability through Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali, who stitched together a vital 143-run partnership. Hridoy notched up a resilient century (100), while Jaker contributed with a well-made 68, helping Bangladesh post a respectable 228 before being bowled out in the 47th over.
Gill Anchors the Chase
India’s run chase began on a strong note, with captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill providing a solid foundation. The duo added 76 runs for the opening wicket before Rohit fell for 41. Despite the loss, Gill continued to dominate the bowlers, playing a composed and unbeaten knock of 101—his 8th ODI century.
Virat Kohli (36) and KL Rahul (29) made useful contributions, ensuring there were no hiccups in the chase. India eventually reached the target in 42.3 overs, securing a crucial win in their tournament opener.
What’s Next?
With this win, India gained early momentum in the Champions Trophy and now gears up for their high-voltage clash against Pakistan on February 23 at the same venue. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will look to bounce back when they take on New Zealand on February 24 in Rawalpindi.
