Imran Khan-backed candidates win 93 seats; Nawaz Sharif gets 75

Pakistan election results 2024 LIVE: Vote counting for Pakistan’s 12th general elections, held on February 8, has concluded, and the latest results show candidates supported by cricketer-turned-politician and jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has got the most seats of the 266 National Assembly seats that went for polling.

PTI was denied its election symbol, the bat, by the country’s Election Commission, and, therefore, it could not contest the polls. Instead, it was forced to field its candidates as independents.

Three major parties were involved in the fray for Pakistan’s 2024 general election: Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)

Pakistan elections result: Who won? Final tally here

  • Independent candidates affiliated with Imran Khan’s PTI secure 93 out of 265 National Assembly seats.
  • Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N wins 75 seats in the National Assembly.
  • Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) secures 53 seats in the National Assembly.
  • Karachi-based Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) of Urdu-speaking people who migrated from India during partition, got 17 seats.

Key highlights so far

With no clear victor in sight, the PML-N and PPP held discussions on government formation, but no final decision has been reached.
There have been allegations of large-scale rigging and the US, UK, and European Union have criticised the election process. Pakistan, however, has denied their charge.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement won 17 seats, while the PML-Q secured three seats. The JUI-F and Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP) obtained three and two seats, respectively. Additionally, MWM and BNP each secured one seat.
Independent candidates affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have filed petitions in the Lahore High Court (LHC), contesting the results in constituencies PP-164 and NA-118, where Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz, a father-son duo, emerged victorious.
Furthermore, the victory of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been legally challenged in Lahore’s NA-130 constituency at the Lahore High Court (LHC).HT
