Fresh Snowfall at Pir Ki Gali Forces Closure of Mughal Road
Ajaz Dar
Shopian, March 16, KNT: Traffic on the Mughal Road connecting Kashmir with the Jammu region was suspended on Sunday after fresh snowfall was reported at Dubijan and Pir Ki Gali in the Pir Panjal range, officials said.
Authorities said the snowfall made road conditions unsafe for vehicular movement, prompting traffic officials to close the road as a precautionary measure.
The development came as parts of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed changing weather conditions due to the influence of western disturbances affecting the region.
Officials said the snow accumulation on the high-altitude stretch of the road created slippery conditions and reduced visibility in certain areas.
Traffic authorities said the decision to suspend movement was taken to ensure the safety of commuters travelling along the mountainous route.
The Mughal Road serves as an important alternate road link between the Kashmir Valley and the Pir Panjal region.
It connects Shopian district in south Kashmir with Poonch and Rajouri districts in the Jammu region through the Pir Panjal mountain range.
Officials said snowfall was particularly reported around Pir Ki Gali, which is among the highest points on the route and frequently witnesses heavy snowfall during winter months.
Authorities said road maintenance agencies and snow clearance teams would assess the situation before allowing traffic to resume.
Officials added that the road will be reopened only after weather conditions improve and the highway is declared safe for travel.
Motorists have been advised to check traffic advisories issued by authorities before planning journeys along the route. [KNT]
