Srinagar, Jan 6: (JKNN) A severe cold wave continued to grip Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, with most parts of the Kashmir Valley recording sub-zero minimum temperatures, while Ladakh’s Leh remained in the deep freeze zone. According to data compiled by Kashmir Weather, Gulmarg once again emerged as one of the coldest places in the Valley, registering a minimum temperature of –8.6°C, while Leh recorded a biting –11.2°C.
In the Kashmir region, Srinagar city recorded a low of –4.0°C, while the temperature at Srinagar Airport plunged further to –4.8°C, indicating an intense cold spell.
South Kashmir witnessed harsher conditions, with Pahalgam at –6.8°C, Shopian at –6.0°C, Anantnag at –5.6°C, and Pulwama at –5.4°C. Other notable readings included Qazigund –3.0°C, Kupwara –3.1°C, Budgam –3.9°C, Baramulla –4.0°C, Bandipora –3.1°C, Pampore –3.0°C, Awantipora –2.4°C, and Kokernag –2.0°C. Kulgam recorded a relatively higher minimum of –0.2°C, while data from Ganderbal, Sonamarg, and Zethan Rafiabad was not available.
The Jammu region experienced comparatively milder temperatures, though higher reaches continued to feel the chill. Jammu city recorded 5.2°C, while Jammu Airport logged 7.6°C. Hill towns saw lower readings, with Bhaderwah at –2.2°C, Rajouri at 0.0°C, Banihal at 1.5°C, and Batote at 1.7°C. Other stations recorded Katra 4.8°C, Udhampur 4.5°C, Ramban 2.7°C, Kishtwar 2.2°C, Doda 3.1°C, Poonch 2.3°C, Reasi 6.7°C, and Kathua 8.4°C. Temperature data for Samba was not available.
In Ladakh, Leh continued to reel under extreme cold conditions, with the mercury settling at –11.2°C, reaffirming the region’s harsh winter spell.
Meteorologists say the prevailing cold wave conditions are likely to persist, urging residents, especially in higher reaches, to take necessary precautions against freezing temperatures.
