Kargil, Feb 27, KNT: A sudden outbreak of disease among dogs has been reported from certain villages of Zanskar Sub-Division in Kargil district, prompting swift intervention by the Animal Husbandry Department.
Officials said affected animals are exhibiting symptoms including conjunctivitis, excessive salivation, purulent nasal discharge, vomiting and diarrhoea. The Department initiated action after receiving a report from the Livestock Development Officer, Zanskar on February 24.
Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Kargil, Dr Gulzar Hussain, said a team led by the Disease Investigation Officer has been deputed to the affected areas for field investigation, sample collection and laboratory confirmation. Treatment of affected animals is underway and awareness campaigns are being conducted in villages.
He appealed to the public not to panic and urged residents to immediately inform the nearest Veterinary Centre, Livestock Development Officer or doctors stationed in the Mobile Veterinary Unit if any dog shows symptoms. He also advised reporting cases through the 1962 field helpline to ensure timely action.
Meanwhile, the Health Department has advised people to avoid direct contact with sick or stray dogs and to ensure that children do not play with such animals. In case of a dog bite or scratch, residents have been advised to wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek immediate medical attention.
Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored and necessary containment measures are in place. [KNT]
