CWTU says it supports admin’s efforts against machine-made copperware

Srinagar Jan 17 (GNS): Copper Workers Trade Union (CWTU) met Director of Handicrafts & Handloom Kashmir to express gratitude for supporting their efforts to prohibit the production of machine-made copperware.

This support stems from the Government of Jammu and Kashmir’s decision to appoint the Director as the authority responsible for enforcing the J&K Prohibition of Manufacture of Specified Copper Utensils (by machine) Act, the Union said in a statement to GNS.

Copperware, recognized both nationally and internationally for its diverse applications, occupies a significant place in the realm of crafts.

The Director informed the union representatives on the department’s varied initiatives to promote genuine handmade copperware, CWTU said.

The Director, it said, appraised about the initiation of a QR code-based labeling process for hand-carved copper products to curb the sale of machine-made copper items and simultaneously boost the market demand for authentic handmade copper products.

The Director, it said, assured the Quality Control Division’s commitment to prioritize the identification of fraudulent artisans and manufacturers in the copperware industry.

The union commended the government’s amendment to the J&K Prohibition of Manufacture of Specified Copper Utensils (by machine) Act and pledged full support to the department in addressing the issue of machine-made copper items, the statement said.

They informed the Director that around 500 artisans have initiated their registration with the department following the amendment. (GNS)
