Handwara [Kupwara], Dec 25 (GNS): Associated Hospital Government Medical Hospital achieved a rare and laudable feat by conducting the first-ever pacemaker (dual chamber) implant here on Monday.

As learnt by GNS, the implant was successfully made on an elderly female by a team of doctors led by Cardiologist Dr Shafiq.

An assisting doctor to Dr Shafiq told GNS that they had received a female of around 65 years with multiple episodes of syncope with ‘Holter’ – a wearable device that keeps track of the heart’s rhythm during daily activities – suggestive of Tachy Brady Syndrome – abnormal automaticity and conduction within the atrial tissue – with multiple more than three-second pauses.

“Dr Shafiq (Cardiologist) took a decision with a team of doctors and informed administration about it and he was provided with all required logistics”, he said adding after a successful session, the team implanted the pacemaker (dual chamber), which marks first of its type of surgery at the hospital.

The treatment, the doctor said, was given under ABPMJAY (Sehat scheme) – free of cost – and fortunately the patient is recovering well. (GNS)
