Afghanistan made history: Gurbaz and Rashid Shine as Afghanistan Claim Historic Series Win Over South Africa
Srinagar: 21/09/2024(JKNN) Afghanistan made history on Friday, securing their first-ever series win against South Africa with a resounding 177-run victory in the second ODI, their biggest triumph in ODI history by runs. This win gives Afghanistan a 2-0 lead in the three-match series, sealing the series with a game to spare.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz led the charge with the bat, scoring his seventh ODI century to help Afghanistan post a commanding total of 311/4 in their 50 overs. He built crucial partnerships with Riaz Hassan (29) and Rahmat Shah (50) before being dismissed for 151 by Nandre Burger. Azmatullah Omarzai added to the Proteas’ misery with a blistering 86.
South Africa’s chase started promisingly with Temba Bavuma (38) and Tony de Zorzi (31) adding 73 for the first wicket. However, once the opening stand was broken, Afghanistan’s bowlers took control. Rashid Khan, celebrating his birthday, tore through the South African line-up with a five-wicket haul, while Nangeyalia Kharote chipped in with 4/26, bowling out the Proteas for just 134 in 34.2 overs.
After the match, Rashid, the Player of the Match, said, “It was a big opportunity for us to win an important series, so I wanted to contribute.” His impressive performance, despite playing with a hamstring injury, along with contributions from young Afghan bowlers, helped seal a monumental series victory for Afghanistan.
