‘A Triangular Contest in Zadibal Constituency’ – PDP’s candidate may emerge as a ‘dark horse’
Srinagar, Sep 14, KNT: The Zadibal constituency in Kashmir capital Srinagar is gearing up for a thrilling electoral contest on September 25, with five prominent candidates vying for the seat. The main contenders include National Conference’s (NC) Tanvir Sadiq, Peoples Conference’s (PC) Molvi Abid Ansari, and People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Gowhar Ali. Additionally, former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu and corporator Tanvir Pathan are also in the fray.
Political observers predict a triangular contest, with NC’s Tanvir Sadiq and PC’s Molvi Abid Ansari being the front-runners. However, PDP’s Gowhar Ali may emerge as a dark horse if voters cast their ballots along sectarian lines. Historically, the Zadibal constituency has not voted on sectarian lines, but the presence of three Shia leaders among the top candidates may split the Shia vote bank.
Molvi Abid Ansari, who won the seat in 2014 on a PDP ticket, is now contesting on a PC ticket. His switch may impact his voter base, while Tanvir Sadiq’s NC candidacy is seen as a strong contender. Junaid Azim Mattu’s entry into the contest may also influence the outcome, as he enjoys significant support in multiple pockets of Dal Lake.
Ground reports suggest that NC’s Tanvir Sadiq is currently in a strong position, followed closely by PC’s Molvi Abid Ansari. However, PDP’s Gowhar Ali, who allegedly has the backing of Mirwaiz-led Awami Action Committee supporters, may still emerge as a dark horse. The constituency’s 35% Shia voter population will play a crucial role in determining the outcome.
As the election date approaches, the Zadibal constituency remains a keenly watched seat, with the outcome uncertain until the very end. [KNT]
