Siliguri, August 22:(KNC)Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the Centre is deploying advanced technologies, including drones, anti-drone systems, thermal imaging, AI-based surveillance, smart surveillance grids and real-time intelligence sharing, to further strengthen India’s border security.
Shah made the remarks while interacting with Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel at the force’s Frontier Headquarters in Siliguri, where he reviewed the security strategy, operational preparedness and technological capabilities of the border forces.
Secure Borders Essential for Safety of West Bengal, India: Shah
The Home Minister asserted that neither West Bengal nor India can remain completely safe unless the country’s frontiers are effectively secured. He also accused the previous West Bengal government of delaying the provision of land required for strengthening fencing and border infrastructure along the India-Bangladesh border.
Shah said he had repeatedly sought 1,129 acres of land since 2014 for strengthening border security, but the requirement remained pending until the change of government in the state.
He further said that 560 acres of land required for strengthening security around the strategically important Siliguri Corridor had also remained pending for years. According to Shah, the land was approved soon after the new government assumed office.
Border Security Administration Headquarters to Come Up in Siliguri
Shah announced the construction of a Border Security Administration Headquarters in Siliguri on an 80-acre plot. He also said the proposed Siliguri-New Delhi transport corridor was moving closer to becoming a reality.
The Home Minister praised the state government for extending cooperation to the Centre and central security agencies, saying approvals related to border security and infrastructure projects were now being provided promptly.
Shah Highlights Importance of Vande Mataram
During the programme, Shah also highlighted the significance of Vande Mataram, saying the national song had received the recognition and dignity he believed it deserved during this year’s Independence Day celebrations.
Later, Shah travelled to Kawakhali Maidan in Siliguri, where he inaugurated an exhibition on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
State Government Assures Full Cooperation on Border Security

Adhikari said the state government had already handed over 242 kilometres of border area to the BSF for strengthening security.
He stressed the need for coordinated efforts involving district magistrates, police, intelligence agencies, the GST Department and central security forces to prevent smuggling, revenue leakages and other illegal cross-border activities.
The Chief Minister also assured the SSB, which guards India’s borders with Nepal and Bhutan, of full cooperation from the state government.
West Bengal to Contribute to Viksit Bharat 2047
Adhikari said West Bengal would play a significant role in the country’s development journey and asserted that the state’s contribution to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 would be substantial.
Shah, meanwhile, lauded SSB personnel for securing the country’s open borders while simultaneously maintaining cultural and people-to-people ties with India’s friendly neighbouring nations.
The Home Minister said the government was increasingly relying on cutting-edge surveillance and intelligence technologies to detect threats, monitor vulnerable areas and improve the overall effectiveness of border management.(KNC)
