Locals Seek Action Against ‘Fake Journalists’, Social Media Pages Over Alleged Abuse of CM
Srinagar, July 12: (JKNN) A group of local residents has expressed concern over what they described as the growing misuse of social media by certain self-styled journalists and page administrators, alleging that abusive and disrespectful language is being used against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in violation of journalistic ethics and public decorum.
The concerned citizens urged the authorities to identify and take action against those allegedly operating fake news platforms and social media pages, claiming that such individuals were exploiting digital platforms to spread offensive content under the guise of journalism.
According to the locals, some social media page administrators and influencers have allegedly used derogatory expressions while referring to the Chief Minister, including the phrase “Topas thavi izzat,” which they described as offensive and unbecoming of responsible public discourse.
They maintained that journalism carries a responsibility to inform the public with accuracy, fairness and dignity, and alleged that some individuals had abandoned these principles in favour of sensationalism and personal attacks.
The residents further said that while freedom of speech is a cornerstone of democracy, it should not be misused to promote hatred, abuse or personal insults. They asserted that criticism of public functionaries is legitimate in a democracy but should remain within the bounds of decency, ethics and the law.
Calling for stricter oversight of social media platforms, the locals said those repeatedly found misusing digital platforms to circulate abusive or misleading content should be dealt with in accordance with the law to preserve the credibility of journalism and maintain civility in public discourse.
