Ramban Missing Man Found Dead After 20-Day Search, Four Arrested in Alleged Vigilante Chase Case
Ramban, May 2, KNT: The body of a 22-year-old man who had gone missing last month was recovered on Saturday from Nallah Bishlari near Kraalna Digdool in Ramban district after a nearly 20-day search operation, officials said.
The deceased was identified as Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, son of Abdul Salam Chopan, a resident of Mundkhal Pogal. Officials said the body was found in a decomposed condition and was shifted to a hospital for medico-legal formalities.
Tanveer had been missing since April 12. According to reports, he allegedly jumped into a stream near Makarkoot along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway while attempting to escape from suspected cow vigilantes who had intercepted him.
The incident, as per available information, occurred when Tanveer was travelling from Jammu with a milch cow and two calves. He was allegedly chased by a group of individuals in two vehicles near Digdool, leading to the sequence of events that resulted in his disappearance.
A massive search operation was launched soon after, involving personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, National Disaster Response Force, Army Quick Reaction Teams, along with NGOs and local volunteers. The operation continued for nearly three weeks before the body was located on Saturday.
Police have registered a case in connection with the incident and arrested four accused identified as Surjeet Singh, Sandeep Singh, Digvijay Singh, and Keval Singh, all residents of Ramban and adjoining Seri areas.
An investigation is underway by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SDPO Banihal Surinder Singh Biloria, officials said, adding that all aspects of the case are being examined.
Family members of the deceased have alleged that the chase and harassment by the group led to Tanveer’s death and have demanded strict action against those responsible.
The case has drawn attention to allegations of vigilantism and the circumstances surrounding the incident, with further findings expected as the investigation progresses. [KNT]
