Kashmiri man detained at Ram Mandir; family cites mental illness
Ayodhya, Jan 10, KNT: Uttar Pradesh Police Saturday claimed that it arrested a man from Kashmir at Ram Mandir who attempted to offer Namaz within the temple complex.
According to UP police, the individual, identified as a 55-year-old from Shopian district of South Kashmir, entered the Ram Mandir premises during the day as a visitor. After paying obeisance at the shrine, he reportedly moved to the Sita Rasoi area, where his actions drew the attention of security personnel stationed at the high security site.
Temple security staff detained the man as a precautionary measure and later handed him over to the local police for questioning. Officials said no untoward incident took place and the situation was brought under control without disruption to temple activities.
Police said the family of the detained man has claimed that he suffers from mental illness and has been undergoing psychiatric treatment for several years. Family members reportedly submitted medical documents issued by a government medical institution in Srinagar to support their claim. The man’s son told local media that his father often leaves home without informing anyone and that the family was unaware of his travel to Ayodhya.
Locals from his native area in Shopian also stated that the man has been on medication and has a history of mental health issues. They said his condition has affected his ability to make informed decisions and understand social boundaries.
Authorities are currently verifying the man’s travel history, medical background, and the circumstances that led to his presence at the temple complex. Police said routine items were recovered from his possession and preliminary questioning did not indicate involvement of any other individual. [KNT]
