Deep Freeze Grips J&K, Ladakh as Gulmarg, Leh Shiver Through Bone-Chilling Night: Gulmarg at –8.8°C, Leh at –9.6°C, According to Kashmir Weather
Srinagar, Jan 5: (JKNN) A sharp cold wave tightened its grip across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on Sunday, pushing night temperatures well below freezing in large parts of the Kashmir Valley and the cold desert region of Ladakh, according to data compiled by Kashmir Weather.
In the Kashmir Valley, the famous ski resort Gulmarg emerged as one of the coldest places, recording a biting minus 8.8°C, while Shopian followed at minus 5.6°C. Tourist hub Pahalgam registered minus 4.8°C, as icy nights continued to dominate south Kashmir. The summer capital Srinagar, along with Srinagar Airport, recorded minus 3.6°C, sending temperatures well below the freezing point. Several other areas including Pulwama (-4.2°C), Budgam (-3.5°C), Awantipora (-3.2°C), Anantnag (-3.2°C) and Pampore (-2.5°C) also remained under intense cold conditions. Data from Kulgam, Ganderbal and Sonamarg was unavailable.
The Jammu region witnessed relatively milder weather, though higher reaches experienced winter chill. Bhaderwah recorded a freezing minus 2.1°C, while Banihal settled at minus 1.3°C. Plains including Jammu city (8.7°C), Kathua (8.4°C) and Jammu Airport (11.1°C) recorded comparatively warmer nights.
Temperatures in Batote (2.1°C), Rajouri (1.6°C), Doda and Ramban (2.7°C each) reflected a noticeable dip.
In Ladakh, bone-chilling cold persisted with Leh recording the lowest temperature of the region at minus 9.6°C, followed closely by Kargil (-8.4°C) and Nubra Valley (-7.5°C), underscoring the severity of winter in the high-altitude areas.
Weather experts say the cold spell is likely to continue, with freezing nights and chilly mornings expected in the coming days.
