Beerwah, Dec 30, KNT: Protests erupted on the Beerwah Magam Road in Beerwah as local women staged a strong demonstration against the Public Health Engineering Department over an acute drinking water crisis during the winter season.
The protesting women voiced serious concern over the prolonged shortage of potable water, stating that the situation has badly disrupted daily life in the area. They alleged that despite repeated complaints submitted to the concerned authorities, no effective measures have been taken to ensure a regular and adequate water supply.
According to the protesters, the crisis becomes more distressing during winters, when freezing temperatures and harsh weather conditions make daily chores difficult. They said women are being forced to travel long distances to fetch water for household use, adding to their hardship and health risks.
Inhabitants from Sheikhpora, Bandmohalla, and Zargar Mohalla also joined the protest, asserting that there is virtually no water supply in their localities. Locals said the absence of drinking water has made normal living conditions unbearable and urged the administration to intervene without further delay.
During the demonstration, traffic movement on the Beerwah Magam Road was disrupted for some time. Personnel from Jammu and Kashmir Police Beerwah reached the spot and managed to restore vehicular movement while ensuring that the protest remained peaceful.
The protesters warned that if the authorities fail to address the water crisis promptly, they would be compelled to intensify their agitation in the coming days. They appealed to the administration to treat the issue as a priority, stressing that access to clean drinking water is a basic necessity and not a privilege. [KNT]
