Demolition Uncertainty Looms as SDA Finalises List of Unauthorized 200 Shops in Downtown Srinagar

Srinagar, Nov 29, KNT: Srinagar Development Authority has prepared a list of over 200 shops in multiple areas of Downtown Srinagar which, according to the authority, have been raised illegally.
Highly placed sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust the list identifies commercial structures in various localities of the old city and categorises them as unauthorised constructions or violations of building norms. The document, prepared after internal verification, is being seen as a precursor to possible enforcement action.
However, it remains unclear whether the authority will proceed with a demolition drive or issue notices first, as political pressure has mounted strongly against such actions in recent days.
These shops are located in multiple areas of Shehar-e-Khas, including Nowhatta, Khanyar, Zaina Kadal, Safa Kadal, Hawal, Gojwara, Eidgah, Rainawari, Malik Angan, Waniyar, Soura, Bucchpora, and adjoining localities.
The development comes amid sharp criticism from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who yesterday accused the Raj Bhawan administration and its appointed officers of running demolition drives without taking the elected government into confidence.

Addressing reporters, Omar Abdullah alleged that bulldozers were being used without the consent of ministers and described the actions as selective and politically motivated. He said his government does not support illegal encroachments but questioned why only certain people and localities were being targeted.
Opposition parties have also raised concerns over the demolition drives in Jammu and parts of Central Kashmir, including Ganderbal, alleging lack of transparency and uniformity. [KNT]
