Srinagar, Oct 21 (JKNN): A powerful earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted parts of Afghanistan late Tuesday night, sending tremors across the Kashmir Valley and causing panic among residents who rushed out of their homes in fear.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck at 23:44:47 IST with its epicenter located 72 km southeast of Fayzabad, Afghanistan, at coordinates 36.5546° N, 71.0004° E and a depth of 261.2 km.
The tremors were felt in Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla, Pulwama, and several other parts of the Valley, as well as in neighboring regions. However, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage so far.
Residents described the quake as a strong, rolling movement lasting several seconds, prompting many to leave their homes despite the late hour.
Authorities are monitoring the situation, and further updates are awaited from seismic agencies and local administrations.
