At least 40 killed in ‘terrorist attack’ at concert hall near Moscow

At least 40 people are believed to have been killed while over 100 others were wounded in a shooting incident that took place at the Crocus City Hall concert venue near Moscow, Russian intel services said. As many as 100 individuals, who were taking shelter in the basement of the building to protect themselves from the shooting and explosions, were evacuated by the emergency services.

Reports indicated that four individuals in camouflage attire opened fire at the people, leaving many wounded as the five dozen ambulances rushed to the tragic incident site to extend aid.

Moreover, an explosion and subsequent fire were also reported at the location of the shooting. Reportedly, the perpetrators, in combat fatigues, had automatic weapons. Despite circulating videos on social media platforms, where the roof of the hall also seems to be collapsing, there is no official confirmation regarding the number of casualties in the appalling incident, which took place nearly 20 kilometres from Moscow’s Red Square.

Russian media RT.com has reported that the attackers barricaded themselves inside of the building that is now engulfed in flames after the deadly shooting. Theatre tickets at the hall were sold out, reports added.

Following the attack, Moscow has called off all mass gatherings and has bolstered security measures at airports and stations. A helicopter has been dispatched to quell the fires at the venue.

Russia has labeled this as a “monstrous” crime. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov condemned the violence, denouncing it as an act of “violence, brutality and recklessness” against civilians.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby reportedly stated, “There’s no indication at this time that Ukraine, or Ukrainians were involved in the shooting … We’re taking a look at it, but I would disabuse you at this early hour of any connection to Ukraine.”
These attacks come after the US embassy in Russia issued a security alert to American citizens, warning of potential extremists’ plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, including concerts.

It remained uncertain whether authorities had successfully neutralised the assailants.

“The terrorists are armed with AKM assault rifles,” a media report said quoting an eyewitness. “Some carry unloads with various ammunition. At least two of the attackers are carrying backpacks, possibly with molotov cocktails.”
