Transformer collision leads to fatal truck accident in Kulgam, Duo among a teacher dead, Two shops damaged

Kulgam, Dec 13, KNT: A road accident in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district claimed the lives of two persons including a teacher. The incident occurred in Pombay village of DH Pora on late Thursday night.

Eyewitnesses told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that a 12-wheeler truck (JK03P-0505) laden with apple boxes lost control and collided with an electric transformer. The impact caused an explosion, followed by the truck overturning, which damaged two cement shops in the village.

Villagers said: “The truck rammed into the transformer with a loud bang. The explosion was deafening, and before we could react, the truck overturned, crushing everything in its path.”

The accident trapped two passengers while the driver and the helper reportedly managed to jump from the truck and flee from the spot.

Despite desperate attempts by locals to rescue the trapped persons, both were found dead when retrieved from the wreckage. The deceased have been identified as Mukhtar Ahmad Itoo and Reyaz Ahmad Rather, both residents of Gopalpora, Kulgam. Reyaz Ahmad was a teacher by profession.

Local sources identified the driver and the conductor who escaped from the spot as Sartaj Ahmed and Shakir Bhat, also residents of Gopalpora.

The owner of the damaged cement shops said that his shops were stocked with cement, and the accident caused significant damage to both the structure and the inventory.

Police and rescue teams rushed to the site following the incident. With the help of a JCB machine, authorities managed to upright the overturned truck and clear the debris. The apple boxes it carried were also severely damaged.

A police official said that an FIR vide number 139/2024 has been registered at DH Pora police station to investigate the cause of the accident. He said efforts are on to track down the driver and the conductor of the truck. [KNT]
